Aspen girls soccer falls at Moffat Co.

The Aspen High School girls soccer team’s long road trip to Craig got even longer Tuesday after a 1-nil loss to the Bulldogs.

“We just couldn’t buy a goal,” Aspen head coach John Gillies said after the Skiers dominated possession and dominated shots on goal but lost 1-0. “That’s the way this game is sometimes.”

The Skiers mashed 35 shots toward the Moffat County goal.

All were denied.

Moffat County had a dozen shots in the afternoon match.

“They had one breakaway and caught us napping,” Gillies said of the game-winning goal with 10 minutes to play.

He said the Skiers played great possession soccer.

“But that’s what happens when you don’t take advantage of your opportunities,” he said. “We were all over them. We dominated the game fully.”

Extremely windy conditions added to the frustration, he said.

“It was very, very, very windy,” Gillies said, adding that Chelsea Moore had an outstanding game in midfield for the Skiers.

“Now, we’ve got to come back Thursday,” Gillies said.

The Skiers, 7-2-0 overall, 5-2-0 in league, will host Grand Valley at 4 p.m. Thursday at Iselin Field by the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC).

Moffat County improved to 3-1-0 in league, 4-5-0 overall, with the win over Aspen.
