The Aspen High School girls lacrosse team will head into spring break with a split of two key games this week.

The Skiers, who will not play again until April 1, defeated Grand Junction 12-11 in a thriller before falling 16-7 at Fruita Monument.

Head coach Jessica Owings, in her first season leading the Skiers, said the team was pleased to get a hard-earned victory at Grand Junction.

“We started out with a 5-0 lead against the Tigers and ended the first half 6-4,” Owings said.

But Grand Junction rallied with a three-goal scoring flurry to tie the game 11-11.

With barely a minute to play, Aspen scored for a 12-11 victory.

Two days later, the Aspen girls had to hit the road again for another game in the Grand Valley.

This time, the potent Fruita Monument team scored a 16-7 victory. The Wildcats improved to 6-1 on the season with the win over Aspen.

The Skiers are 4-1 heading into spring break.

Aspen will return to action April 1 when the Skiers host rival Battle Mountain. The Skiers beat the Huskies 22-8 in a game in Edwards on April 14.

The Aspen girls lacrosse team will host Durango on April 4 and Steamboat Springs on April 10.

The Skiers will play at Cherry Creek on April 11.
