Aspen girls golf team wins opener

The Aspen High School girls golf team started off the season win a familiar championship.
The Skiers won the opening event of the year at the Chipeta Golf Course in Grand Junction last week.
The Skiers, in team scoring, captured first place and third place out of 22 high school teams competing.
The Aspen girls golf team is coached by Don Buchholz.
The Aspen team of Dolores Sharaf, Elsa Cassidy, Katherine Doherty, Kat Kowar and Katy Miller fired a one-over 61 for first-place honors.
The Aspen squad of Nikki Blizzard, Hazel Wille, Mae Sharaf, Julia Fahy and Zoe Guthrie shot 69 for third place.
Coal Ridge High School of New Castle finished second with a score of 65 while Grand Junction took fourth with a 70.
Gunnison High School at 71 to round out the top five.
“For our first tournament of the year, we came out with guns blazing,” Buchholz said. “We felt good about this course; we’ve won it the past two years.”
He said the young players shined in the first event of the season. “All of our players did very well. I am so proud of the girls’ performance, especially so early in our season.”
