The Aspen High School boys tennis team is off to a fast start, considering today is the first day of school.

The Skiers opened the season Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction at the annual Lowry Bishop Invitational.

Six teams competed in the two-day tournament. The Skiers, the only Class 3A team in the field, went 2-3 in team duals against Class 5A opponents.

“I was pleased with the team’s performance in the first competition of the year,” head coach Gary Quandt said, adding that the matches came against bigger schools.

“The No. 4 doubles team of Andy Vernier and freshman Keegan Mehall came in second place in their division,” said Quandt, who also is the director of tennis at the Aspen Golf and Tennis Club.

Aspen defeated Grand Junction Central, 5-2, to open the tournament.

Annual 5A powerhouse Grand Junction topped the Skiers by a similar 5-2 margin.

The Skiers lost a 4-3 matchup with Fruita Monument and a 7-0 matchup against Fossil Ridge High School, of Fort Collins.

Aspen shut out Smoky Hill, 7-0, to wrap up play against the big school teams.

In their individual and doubles matches for the weekend, here are the Skiers results:

Dylan Behr 2-3

Bradley Broeking 2-3

Matthew Lambert 2-3

Henry Godfrey 3-2

Gordon Carr 2-3

Rocky Tschappat 2-3

Alex Reagan 3-1

Grant Goodman 4-1

Andy Vernier 2-2

Keegan Mehall 3-2

The AHS boys teannis team will return to Grand Junction on Sept. 6-7 for the annual Western Slope Open.
