The Aspen High School boys soccer team ended a frustrating stretch with a resounding 6-1 victory at Montezuma-Cortez High School in Cortez on Friday afternoon.
“We went after this game more on the offensive,” Aspen head coach Dave Francis said of the road win.
He said the Skiers have been working hard in practice.
“They put what they learned into the game,” Francis said.
“We scored two early goals, and that helped,” he said.
But Cortez answered to cut the lead to 2-1 in the opening half.
The Skiers quickly scored two more goals for a 4-1 halftime lead.
Joel Brice scored four goals in the Aspen victory.
John Heaphey and Dylan Link each scored a goal for the Skiers, 2-8-0 overall, 1-3-0 in conference play.
“In the second half, it was end-to-end,” he said of the Cortez long-ball attack and high line on defense. “We controlled it pretty well.”
Francis said the win will help the Skiers plow into the final stretch of the regular season.
“This will kick them into their final few games,” Francis said. “The guys were really excited about the win.”
The Skiers will host Colorado Rocky Mountain School at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
“That’ a game the boys felt like they should have won (in Carbondale),” he said of Aspen’s earlier loss at CRMS. “We won’t have to get them up for this game.”
