Aspen boys basketball beats Vail Christian in home opener
Fueled by a friendly crowd, all the Aspen High School boys basketball team needed to do in its home opener Friday against Vail Christian was stay composed and hold on.
“We had the lead at the end of that game and we just had to be smart,” Aspen coach Alex Schrempf said. “The boys took their time. They valued the ball and they executed. That was what was really important.”
It came down to the final seconds, but the Skiers held on to beat the Saints 58-57 in their final game before the winter break.
The game was essentially neck and neck the entire way, with the teams tied after the first and third quarters. Vail Christian led by a point at halftime.
“The energy definitely helped us out and being patient and keeping our composure,” AHS senior Zack George said. “We did that really well and we executed on offense and we played some pretty good defense through the end. We just got a good team win.”
Tied at 40 entering the fourth quarter, senior James Kistner provided a couple of opportunistic putbacks in the final two minutes to stretch Aspen’s lead out to five points. Down 58-55 with 4.9 seconds to play, the Saints drove the basket for a quick bucket to cut it to one, but left themselves 0.7 seconds and the game was effectively over.
George and A.J. Detrick each had 18 points to lead the Skiers (3-2).
Also Friday, the Aspen High School girls basketball team lost, 55-19, to Vail Christian.
Aspen hockey pushes Regis Jesuit
The Aspen High School hockey team pushed defending state champion Regis Jesuit to the edge but came up just short in a 5-3 defeat Friday at Lewis Ice Arena.
“We as coaches just need to keep building them, keep growing them and keep having them learn,” AHS coach Dru Lucchesi said. “You can tell there is still work for us to do. We just got to clean stuff up and these games can go a different way.”
Dom Lanese had two goals for the Skiers, while Liam Rigney had one.
AHS is now 1-4 on the season.
