Aspen, Basalt girls soccer teams fall in second round of state playoffs
The Aspen and Basalt High School girls soccer teams saw their seasons come to an end Saturday with second-round losses in the Class 3A state tournament.
Basalt, seeded No. 19, had defeated No. 14 seed Salida in the first round on Friday. Saturday, the Longhorns had a 1-0 halftime lead on No. 3 seed and host Manitou Springs, only to eventually fall, 3-1. Basalt finishes the season 12-5 overall, its most wins since also winning 12 in 2009.
Aspen, seeded No. 21, played at No. 5 seed Peak to Peak in Lafayette on Saturday, losing 4-0. It was 1-0 at halftime. The Skiers had defeated No. 12 seed Middle Park 2-1 in overtime on Friday in the first round. The Skiers finish the season 11-6 overall, its third consecutive season of double-digit wins.
The final eight teams remaining in Class 3A include No. 1 Jefferson Academy vs. No. 9 SkyView Academy, No. 3 Manitou Springs vs. No. 6 The Academy, No. 4 Liberty Common vs. No. 5 Peak to Peak, and No. 2 Colorado Academy vs. No. 7 Kent Denver. Colorado Academy won 5-0 over No. 15 seed Vail Mountain in the second round, while Jefferson Academy was a 6-0 winner over No. 17 Coal Ridge in the second round.
