The second annual Ski for the Pass attracted a field of nearly 50 cross country skiers last weekend for the benefit for the Independence Pass Foundation.

Under bluebird skiers, 49 skiers completed the classic trek from the winter gate on Highway 82 to the Lincoln Creek Road turnoff, four miles up the pass.

The overall winner was Pierre Wille, who won for the second year in a row. He finished in 38 minutes, 11 seconds.

First female finisher was Berit Daniels, who also repeated from last year. She finished in 40:34.

The event was part of the Aspen Cup Nordic Series and was hosted jointly by the Ute Mountaineer, the Independence Pass Foundation and the City of Aspen Recreation Department.

The Ute provided logistical support and handled registrations. The City of Aspen set track and handled timing, and the Foundation provided publicity, promotion, and race day volunteers and supplies.

The Ski for the Pass is a benefit for the Foundation, which collected $5 for every registrant.

“This is a great family event and gives our cross country community a unique opportunity to ski up the pass under ideal conditions”, said Mark Fuller, director of the Independence Pass Foundation. “We hope to grow the event in future years and make it a winter tradition mirroring our spring fundraiser, the Ride for the Pass. We are very grateful to the Ute Mountaineer, the City of Aspen and all of our supporters, volunteers and racers for their help and participation.”
