The Aspen Times
The soccer season ended Friday for the Aspen High School girls team.
The Skiers, the No. 20 seed in the 24-team Class 3A state bracket, faced off against Alamosa in the opening round of the playoffs with the Mean Moose holding on for a 1-0 victory at Kent Denver High School.
“We had all the possession in the world, and we just could not finish,” Aspen head coach John Gillies said of the game against No. 13 Alamosa.
“They did have a good defense. They were well organized,” Gillies said of Alamosa.
The Mean Moose scored the game’s only goal about 30 minutes into the first half.
“We had a very shallow squad,” Gillies said after four Aspen starters were forced to miss the Friday playoff game with illness.
He also praised the play of goalie Jessica Coxon along with Pascale Augspurger.
The Skiers finished the season 10-5-0.
Alamosa improved to 13-2-0. The Mean Moose will play Kent Denver today in the second round of the playoffs.
