The Aspen High track and field team hosts its first and only home meet of the season on Saturday morning at the Aspen track.About eight teams are expected to participate, including some Basalt High student-athletes. However, with the Class 3A Western Slope Regional Meet one week further out, the Aspen Invitational will not be a showcase of the all-out.

Saturday’s action will follow a rolling schedule, with the field events beginning at 9 a.m. and the running events at 10:30 a.m., or thereabouts.”It’ll be relatively low key, but still pretty competitive. And the reason I say low key, is that there’s no reason to have a kid run two miles this week if they’re going to be running a hard two miles the next week,” said Aspen coach Chris Keleher. “It’s time to cool down.”

“We’re a young team, but still the kids are as ready as we can get them. The three coaches, Travis [Benson], Jason [Kruger] and I, can hardly wait for regionals. They’re going to learn a lot, have fun and challenge themselves. And, you never know what’s going to come out of it – there are always shocking performances and we hope we get some of those.”Last Saturday, April 30, the AHS team traveled to Craig for the Clint Wells Invitational. Results follow:GIRLS800 Meters6th Natalie Obermeyer (2:39)1600 Meters3rd Brittany Fortier (5:59.22)3200 Meters1st Christy Severy (12:10.41)300 Meter Hurdles10th Icyla Walter (57.17)High Jump7th (tie) Sophie Ben-Hamoo (4-foot-6)4X400 Meter Relay5th Natalie Obermeyer, Kyla Walter, Cornelia Carpenter and Reagan Mahaffey (4:44.67)Girls Team Results (17 Teams)1.
