Aspen High’s varsity softball team slaughtered Cedaredge in a doubleheader Saturday, winning 16-6 and 13-3.

The Skiers won both games by the Class 3A Western Slope League’s “slaughter rule,” which automatically ends games whenever a team falls behind by 10 runs at any point.

Senior Leandra Sivess led the way for Aspen, pitching both games and holding Cedaredge to a total of nine runs.

Catcher Carly Magill stole the show, literally, stealing home to end the second game.

“She’s really good,” said Aspen coach Ed Zane about Magill, a sophomore.

Shortstop Alex Bethel, outfielder Cori Hach and second baseman Kristin Walla also had phenomenal days, Zane said.

“Walla made some great plays,” he said. “She knocked everything down.”

But Zane said senior Jenna Rosen, who was celebrating her 18th birthday Saturday, was the star of the day.

“She hit the ball really well,” said Zane. “And she had two diving catches at third base.”

The Skiers, now 5-10 overall and 4-2 in league play, travel to Eagle Valley on Tuesday for a quasi-doubleheader. The two teams faced each other earlier this month, but were rained out midway through the game. The first game on Tuesday will be a continuation of that rain-delayed game, while the second will be a full game.

Eagle Valley is typically one of the strongest teams in the conference, but Zane thinks the Skiers have a good shot at knocking them off.

“I think we can beat them,” he said.
