AHS golfers tee off at home today

Aspen Times writer

The Aspen High School girls golf team hosts its annual tournament today at the Aspen Golf Club.

Golfers from 10 schools from the Western Slope will be competing, and among the aces should be Aspen’s own Kristin Walla.

Walla, a junior, won a high school tournament at Gypsum’s Cotton Ranch on April 29 and has finished in the top five of the majority of events she has entered this season. Never mind that Aspen is her home course.

Junior Liz Floyd and freshman Ashley Fish round out Aspen’s team. Other teams include Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Eagle Valley, Montrose, Grand Junction Central, Battle Mountain, Rifle and Moffat County.

The tourney is slated for a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

“The girls have been improving continuously throughout the season and we’re hoping to use the match as a warm-up for regionals,” said AHS coach Andy Scrivner, referring to next Monday and Tuesday’s Western Slope Regional Tourney.

“We’re hoping to get the ball rolling in the right direction,” Scrivner added.
