AHS girls win first two

The Aspen High girls basketball team opened the season with back-to-back victories in the Aspen Invitational.In Friday’s opener, the AHS girls routed West Grand of Kremmling 49-22, with junior forward Corie Thompson scoring a game-high 18 points.

In the second game of the tourney Saturday against former Class 3A Western Slope League rival Eagle Valley, now playing in the larger Class 4A, Aspen eked out a 33-29 victory, with Thompson chipping in 14 points.Aspen and Eagle Valley played to a 15-all tie through the first half, but the Skiers broke out for 12 points in the third quarter while limiting Eagle to 5. Junior point guard Carly Magill scored nine points for Aspen, junior guard Carly Rosen hit a pair of three-pointers to make six and junior forward Brittany Fortier had four.

Against West Grand, Magill added nine points while Rosen (with two more threes) and Fortier scored eight each.Next up for the AHS girls is the Thursday to Saturday Steamboat Springs Invitational.
