PARACHUTE – The Skiers ran out of momentum at Parachute on Saturday.

The Aspen High School girls soccer team lost its first match of the season in a 5-1 loss to Grand Valley.

“I brought the wrong team,” Aspen head coach John Gillies said. “The team that has been playing all season, I think we left that team back in Aspen.”

He said the Skiers experienced a similar fate a year ago in a flat-line loss at Vail Mountain.

“We were shy, and I don’t know why,” he said. “We forgot how to play.”

Grand Valley scored three goals in the first half and two more in the second.

Aspen’s goal, from freshman Logan McNamee, came in the second half.

“They dominated. They were the better team (Saturday),” Gillies said.

Ashlynn Speakman and Randi Sheridan scored two goals each for Grand Valley, 5-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 in league matches.

Aspen fell to 3-1-2 overall, 2-1-0 in conference.

The Skiers will be back on the road next week with a match at Rangely on Tuesday and another at Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale on Thursday afternoon.
