The Aspen High School girls golf team collected its second consecutive third-place tournament finish this week.

The Skiers finished third in their own tournament — the annual Aspen Invitational, staged at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale.

Montrose won the tournament in dominating fashion. Montrose posted a composite 252 to take first place.

Fruita Monument finished second at 289.

The Skiers, coached by Alden Richards, were just four strokes back of Fruita Monument in third place at 293.

Zara Iacono led the Aspen team with a 95 on the River Valley Ranch course.

Teammates Dolores Sharaf and Julia Fahey shot 99s.

Nikki Blizzard shot a 112 for Aspen.

Chelsea Peterson led the balanced Montrose team with an 85.

Jordan Cherry shot 85; Mikayla McKie shot 89; Brooke Behnecke shot 91.

Just last week, the Aspen girls golfers finished third in the big, 15-team Montrose Invitational, held at Cobble Creek.

Next week, the Skiers will play in the Moffat County Invitational in Craig on Monday before participating in the Rifle Invitational next Tuesday.

The regional championships for the AHS girls will be the following week — May 6 at Adobe Creek in Fruita.

Aspen boys basketball blows by Vail Mountain, improves to 11-1 overall

The Skiers’ latest victim was Vail Mountain School on Monday, a 67-47 non-league rout inside the AHS gymnasium. It was the second time the teams had played in less than a week, as AHS also won in Vail last Tuesday, 40-28. Aspen is in position to possibly host a playoff game next week.
