Aspen High girls golf team competes in Rifle, New Castle
The Aspen High School girls golf team competed Tuesday at the Rifle High School Invitational at the Rifle Creek Golf Course, where AHS’s Zoe Guthrie shot 99 for 11th place in the 37-golfer field.
The Rifle duo of Masi Smith (75) and Elly Walters (78) finished first and second, respectively.
“Zoe had a tough day on a couple of the holes but persevered and stayed strong for a good finish,” AHS coach Don Buchholz said. “Even though she wasn’t happy with her swing on Tuesday, I thought she did good by finishing in 11th place.”
Aspen also competed Wednesday at the Coal Ridge invite, played at Lakota Canyon Golf Club in New Castle. Aspen’s Kat Kowar (109) and Julia Fahy (111) were among the 19 golfers to compete. Glenwood Springs golfer Lauren Murphy led the way with 75, nine shots ahead of second place Ally Shuman of Palisade.
“Winds howled throughout the day, making playing conditions much harder, but our girls played on with their chins up,” Buchholz said. “Having to add a couple of clubs to some approach shots made it rough to calculate which club to hit.”
The Skiers next compete Tuesday at the Eagle Valley invite at the Gypsum Creek Golf Course. AHS then competes May 1 at Moffat County before readying for regionals May 8 in Parachute.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard on Tuesday announced the final U.S. World Cup schedule, a lineup that includes the Aspen World Cup from March 3 to 5 on Aspen Mountain. Those races will include a men’s super-G and two men’s downhills.
