The Aspen High School boys golf team, led by three freshmen, kicked off the season with a stunning victory at the Cedaredge Invitational on Thursday.
The Skiers, led by Colter Zwieg’s 76 for a second-place individual tie, totaled 242 to take the team honors in the first prep tournament of the year, held at challenging Deer Creek Village Golf Club.
“It was a lot of fun out there,” Zwieg said after he tied for second in his first high school tournament. “It was super hot, especially on the back nine.”
Temperatures hit the mid-90s in Cedaredge, located on the southern edge of the Grand Mesa.
Montrose was second in team scoring.
Chris Rudosky of Montezuma-Cortez, the son of the Conquistador Golf Course pro, won medalist honors Thursday with a 71.
“I just wanted to hit greens today because there were tiny greens here, tiny greens,” Zwieg said. “It turned out great.”
Teammate Dominic Lanese IV shot a 77.
And fellow freshman Dawson Holmes added an 89 in the ultra-hot conditions at Deer Creek. Henry Ferguson added a 91. Nicholas Slossberg added a 93 in the inaugural tournament.
“It was very exciting,” Aspen head coach Mary Woulfe said. “To have three freshman score and for us to win was great.”
The AHS golf team will continue the new season Monday at the Grand Junction Invitational at Bookcliff Country Club.
