The Aspen High School baseball team came from behind to beat rival Basalt 5-4 in a thriller on Tuesday night.

After six previous lead changes, the Skiers took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning.

Colt Burden had a hit for the Skiers.

Matt Popish was sent in as a pinch-runner.

He scored Aspen’s fifth and final run on an RBI-single by Tristan Niskanen.

“It was a good team effort all the way,” Aspen head coach Dave Fuentes said. “Everyone played a role; everyone got in the game.”

He said Harry Kahn pitched six innings and allowed only four runs on five hits. He struck out five.

Jamison Fuentes came on for the seventh inning, striking out two and picking up the save.

He also had two hits in the Aspen victory.

Coach Fuentes said both teams struggled with errors and misplays.

“But we made a lot of the plays we needed to make,” he said.

The Skiers improved to 2-5 in league play, 3-7 overall.

Basalt moved to 3-7 in league, 4-9 overall.

Aspen is scheduled to play Moffat County in Craig today.

Basalt will host Roaring Fork today.
