50-mile marathon kicks off Snowmass National

The four-day Snowmass NORBA National Mountain Bike Series kicked off Thursday morning with the 50-mile marathon race.Staged in “brutally hot” and “roasting” conditions, according to race officials, 34 racers competed in the marathon. The route, twice around a 25-mile loop, included portions of the Rim, Highline, Blake, Powerline, Government and Cross Mountain trails.Avon’s Jay Henry won the men’s division with a time of 3 hours, 38 minutes and 1 second. Travis Brown of Boulder was second and Chris Eataugh of Ellicott City, Md., was third.In the women’s race, a couple of Moniques stole the show. Monique Sawicki of Cali Mesa, Calif., won in 4:38:22, followed by Monique Merrill of Breckenride in second and Jennifer Wilson of El Paso, Tex., in third.Today’s lineup includes mountain-cross racing and practice for super D and downhill.
