33rd Rat Race heats up Spring Gulch Sunday
A chill wind at the Spring Gulch Nordic Ski Area above Carbondale on Sunday couldn’t keep away dedicated junior and senior “ratties” at the 33rd annual Rat Race, a fund-raiser for the Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) nordic ski team.
Skiers from age 4 to 60-plus tackled a course that ranged from .5 kilometers for the youngest to just under 10K for adults.
All those ages 10 and under received a prize, including Cassidy Jane Creer, Lina Sutro, Kajsa Sutro, Ivy Durand, Anna Menke, Auden Menke, Nicholas Penzel and Levi Gavette.
Adults raced close to 10K, either skate or classic style. Finishing first overall was Andrew Gardner, head of the CRMS nordic program, who finished in a blazing 28:52. Second place overall, and first for women, went to Berct Bjerke-Daniels in 32:05, followed by Jerry Evans in 33:46.
Attire at the relaxed (yet competitive among some of the adults) event ranged from a taste of the tropics to serious spandex, with a few rat whiskers drawn on faces. All “ratties” enjoyed a free lunch and awards ceremony at CRMS following the event.
A local kid got on the X Games Aspen podium on Sunday night, but it wasn’t the one most people expected. Even Jon Sallinen didn’t think he’d be taking home a medal.
