Woody Creek fundraiser first for Grassroots Asia

Grassroots Asia is hosting its first annual fundraiser, “Stories From Odisha,” from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 5 at the Woody Creek Community Center.

Transport yourself to the land of Lord Jagannath, called “the soul of India,” and view the challenges faced by impoverished young girls from rural villages. Here, in this magical land, women’s rights are still an unrealized dream.

Learn about the stories of Jayanti, Sukanti, Tulsi, Baby and others who have risen from the depths of despair with the help of one another and the WISH Network.

A slideshow presentation will be conducted by Debbie Pennington, a former Snowmass resident who has spent 10 years developing the WISH (Women’s Independent Self-Help) Network, a women’s-rights initiative. Most of the funding for the WISH Network has come from Roaring Fork Valley individuals, businesses and foundations.

The cost to attend is donation only. There will be opportunities to fund specific items for the girls, participate in a small silent auction and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks from the cash bar. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to support the WISH girls.

WISH offers educational scholarships and runs a residential vocational and life skills training center in Odisha, India. WISH also offers emergency services including medical care, legal aid and scholarships to impoverished women.
