The board of the Snowmass-Wildcat Fire Protection District conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Snowmass Village fire station May 23.

The $17 million project became a reality in November when Snowmass voters gave the district approval.

Since then, the district has finalized plans, received town review and permitting and relocated operations to a temporary facility at the Rodeo Grounds parcel and the Snowmass Mall.

“This is a significant day for the district and Snowmass Village” Snowmass Fire Chief Scott Thompson said. “Although our current fire station has served us well, the new fire station will help us to respond quickly and effectively with the proper equipment and tools readily at hand.”

Site demolition commenced May 23. Demolition of the building is expected to begin Tuesday.
