Snowmass Base Village takes big step forward
The Aspen Times
The Snowmass Village Town Council voted unanimously in favor Monday of a resolution that will move new plans for Base Village to the next stage of review.
Related Colorado’s application to amend the plans for the stalled development has hit several roadblocks during the conceptual stage of review, not least of which was disagreement over a community benefit it is required to provide as the developer.
But after lengthy negotiations at an April 6 council meeting, Related and the Town Council agreed Monday that the developer would build an ice rink and fountains in the heart of Base Village as well as provide $4.5 million for the town to build its own community-purpose facility outside the development. That deal was formalized in a letter submitted by Related on Wednesday.
Related also has agreed to reconsider how much retail space is built. In addition, it is considering adding a pool facility somewhere else in the development to serve owners of Base Village condos.
The resolution progressed smoothly at Monday’s meeting, with council members asking questions and adjusting language on other issues but were largely supportive of moving the project forward.
There’s still a long road ahead, however. Town Manager Clint Kinney told the council that it will likely be several months before the application is back before the Planning Commission, as Related has to prepare its materials for the next stage, which town staff members then review.
