Letter: Traffic jams in Aspen and Snowmass
Ski season is coming to an end and summer is around the corner. And still not one thing has been planned or started to solve the Entrance to Aspen problem and the agonizing traffic jams into and out of town. So we will sit and wait and waste time and burn gas into the environment.
I believe there is only one way to finally resolve our traffic and parking problem.
1. The roundabout is a major problem, which causes major delays along Highway 82. A bridge over, or a tunnel under, the roundabout is necessary to eliminate these delays, in addition to any new road into Aspen.
2. The current S-Curve in Aspen could be used as a one-way road out. Then a new straight road from about Cemetery Lane over the Marolt Open Space could be constructed as a one-way in. This would be cost effective because it would still use the existing road and not require the straight road in to be built to accommodate traffic in both directions.
3. Using this approach, a parking lot could be developed on the Marolt Open Space. Then shuttle service could be provided between the lot and downtown Aspen. Parking and/or shuttle service could be free or paid. This would reduce traffic into the core of Aspen and also would help the parking problem.
4. I also believe nonstop bus service should be provided between Aspen and Snowmass Village during the summer months. This is especially needed in light of the recreational activities that are going to be installed in Snowmass. I believe this would help the traffic situation and also would be extremely beneficial for both tourists and the business in both areas.
It’s time to stop planning and start doing.
