Letter: Gardner helping opponent’s campaign

The belief that government cannot do anything positive and that “Coloradoans are falling further and farther behind” was in one way or the other, Cory Gardner’s stock answer to every question and problem, per his interview with The Aspen Times.

Of particular interest to me was Mr. Gardner’s No Climate Tax Pledge. His signature, which hopes to erect a phantom wall against the carbon fee and dividend plan, points the ideology finger straight at Gardner. He is standing with his hands over his ears like a stubborn child, refusing to even try to understand a possible piece of the solution to looming climate chaos. A carbon fee and dividend would return all revenues, collected from those that extract carbon from its source, to all citizens. Thus the low-income earners and people on fixed incomes, that Mr. Gardner and Republicans claim to want to defend from this fee, would receive a dividend-like return; this their protection from any possible ripple effect produced in the economy. Citizens Climate Lobby lays out the plan in detail.

Should he choose to look seriously at the plan, I know Cory Gardner can understand the revenue-neutral design, not to mention the beneficial effects rendered on climate change generally. We must look beyond ideology, and stop repeating the same behavior, if we want to deal with our modern predicament. At this point Mr. Gardner is doing a good job of making Mark Udall the responsible adult in this critical discussion, and in the Senate race.
