History: Teeing off

Aspen Historical Society
Special to the Sun

“According to the Janss Corp., nine holes are planned this summer and an additional nine will be added at a future date,” announced the Aspen Times in 1966. The original Snowmass course, called the Brush Creek Country Club, was designed by acclaimed golf course designer J. Press Maxwell, but golfers would have to wait until 1968 to play due to construction and then the maturing of the grass. This image by Robert Hadden shows the ski runs in the background as they use large machinery to construct the new course.

Editor’s note: This page is a partnership between the Snowmass Sun and the Aspen Historical Society with two primary goals in mind: to improve the knowledge of Snowmass history in the region and to collect historical photographs of the Snowmass region for the society. If you have pieces of history to donate, please send them to or call 970-925-3721.
