History: Sunrise reflection
“Spectators were up at the crack of dawn last Saturday and Sunday to watch the fifth annual Snowmass invitational Balloon Race” commented The Aspen Times in 1981. “Thirty-two colorful balloons ascended from the launch site near the Snowmass Stables in the early morning calm. The brightly colored balloons hovering quietly against the pink and yellow flush of sunrise make this one of the most spectacular events of the summer season.”
The balloon festival, which started in the late 1970s and was originally held in mid-July to late August, was a series of dawn launches and races along the valley. Now in its 39th year, the festival includes other activities and takes place Sept. 12-14 in Snowmass Village.
