History: Summertime tunes

“Back to what it used to be and how it started — that’s how one Aspen Deaf Camp board member described the annual picnic at the Snowmass rodeo grounds last Sunday,” claimed The Aspen Times on Aug. 29, 1985. “In recent years the annual picnic has drawn crowds of over 3,000 anticipating special appearances of John Denver or Jimmy Buffett. While this year the rock concert atmosphere and crowds were absent, the 300 or more guests were treated to perfect weather, good food, fine music from local bands, and a rodeo. … One spectator watched cowboys contest with the bareback horses and noted, ‘the horses are winning’” in reference to the captured image of a horse bucking off its rider by Frank Martin.
