History: Classic taste

Aspen Historical Society, Aspen Times Collection

“Wine classic is a taster’s delight” claimed The Aspen Times on June 27, 1985, when reporting on the third annual Aspen/Snowmass International Wine Classic. Events during the three-day classic were held in the newly opened Snowmass Conference Center as well as at the Inn at Aspen. One event included a talk from David Pollak, the great-grandson of David M. Hyman, financial backer of the Smuggler mine in the 1880s and 1890s, who reflected on his roots in the valley and his philosophy of fine winemaking. The 2013 Food & Wine Classic also came back to its roots this year, holding events in Snowmass Village once again.

Editor’s note: This page is a partnership between the Snowmass Sun and the Aspen Historical Society with two primary goals in mind: to improve the knowledge of Snowmass history in the region and to collect historical photographs of the Snowmass region for the society.

‘The Beach Show’ keeps things light with Base Village art show

Curator and artist Matty Davis likes to keep things light. Wear-a-wetsuit-to-a-party, put-240-beach-balls-in-a-gallery light. He plans to do both at “The Beach Show,” a summer-themed show in the dead of winter that will feature the works of eight artists at Straight Line Studio in Base Village from 6 to 9 p.m., Jan. 14.
