Daniel AlpertApril 10, 1917 – Nov. 4, 2015

Daniel Alpert, age 98, died Nov 4, 2015 in Eugene, OR. Physicist, interdisciplinary problem solver and visionary educator. An avid skier until his 92rd year, hiker and resident of Snowmass Village and Aspen for 16 years, Dan was born in 1917 in Hartford, CT. He received a BS from Trinity College in 1937 and a Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University in 1942. He met his beloved wife Natalie at Stanford and they married in 1942. At Westinghouse Research Labs in Pittsburgh he was instrumental in the development of airborne radar. He won the Gaede-Langmuir prize for his research on ultra high vacuum. In 1957 he came to the University of Illinois as a professor of physics, and became the director of Coordinated Science Lab, then Dean of the Graduate College, then the director of the Center for Advanced Studies. He played a key role in the innovative PLATO system for computer-based education programs. He was a member of the board of advisors for the MSTE program. He was on the board of trustees of Trinity College in Hartford for 25 years.

Preceded in death by his wife Natalie B. Alpert and sister Helen Alpert Abuza. Survived by daughters Laura Alpert and Amy Arai, grandchildren Leslie Arai and Daniel Arai. Per Dan’s request, no services will be held.
