Editor’s note: Business as Usual is a series highlighting businesses in Snowmass Village.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Snowmass Village Salon is the village’s one-stop shop for hair, nail and skin services. With plenty of experience to guide her, owner Mya Cote is also opening a licensed school in the salon.

Snowmass Sun: How did your business start?

Mya Cote: My business opened its doors in November of 1995. We expanded our space two years later with three hair chairs and two spa pedicure units. In 2012, the Westin requested we move across the hall, so we created a new salon there. Our new space is great, with the hair and nail services separated. Still small, three hair stations, three manicure and three pedicure units.

Snowmass Sun: What services do you offer?

Mya Cote: We are the only salon in Snowmass Village that offers full services. This includes hair, nails, skin, waxing and massage services. In retail we offer a variety of products due to client demand: Paul Mitchell, Goldwell, Moroccanoil and Rusk. And we are proud to announce a new product line from Los Angeles — Brutus and Butch. Our skin line is Dermalogica, and in nails, we carry OPI, Essie, CND and all the latest in shellac and strengtheners.

Snowmass Sun: What makes your business unique?

Mya Cote: Our business is unique in the sense that we offer all hair, nail, face and massage in Snowmass Village. There is no need to go to Aspen.

Also, we are starting a school for two students in our salon. We have seen for a long time that schools teach to pass the Colorado test but not really what a stylist, esthetician, manicurist, etc., would actually be doing in a real salon. There is a large dropout rate from school to our business because the real world can be tough. We want to make our students ready for Aspen and Snowmass clients.

Snowmass Sun: Who is your primary clientele?

Mya Cote: Our clientele consists of locals, second-home owners and tourists from all over the world, including Australia, Brazil and the UK. Thanks to our loyal local business, we are able to survive the offseasons. Starting our school will be great for locals because we will offer student prices. The instructors at the salon will supervise all work done by students, and students won’t be able to see clients until they pass our standards of service.

Snowmass Sun: What is the best thing about running a business in Snowmass Village?

Mya Cote: The best thing about having a salon in Snowmass Village are the clients and people I work with. Our local and second-home-owner clients are the best. We see people from all over the world. And most importantly, tourists who come here return because it is so beautiful in the summer and the skiing in the winter is the best. My staff wants to please above all else, and that is why we have been successful here for 20 years.
