Aspen Skiing Co. to present freeride competition Feb. 8

Staff report

New this year, Aspen Skiing Co. will host an International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association-sanctioned junior regional freeride competition on Feb. 8. The competition will offer skiers and snowboarders an opportunity to qualify for future national competitions. The competition is open to skiers and snowboarders between ages 10 and 18 and has a strong focus on line choice, fluidity, control, technique, style and energy. The venue for the competition will be Aspen Highlands on a run that will be announced at a later date. Local legend and big-mountain pro skier Chris Davenport will emcee.

“We are excited to provide young rippers with the opportunity to show off at Highlands,” said Cat Leonaitis, event marketing manager at Aspen Skiing Co. “The snowpack is already incredible, so we are looking forward to some great conditions in February. We are working with the IFSA and Aspen Highlands ski patrol to pick the perfect venue.”

There will be ski and snowboard divisions for athletes 11 and younger, 12 to 14 and 15 to 18.

Registration is now open. The cost to register is $60 and does not include a competition day lift ticket. Tickets will be available for $43 at the ticket window with competitor bib. Registration is available at http://www.aspensnowmass.com/JRfreeride. All competitors must be 10 years old by Dec. 31. Age categories are determined by an athlete’s age as of Dec. 31.
