A time to play

Snowmass Village kids have a new place to play thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor at the Snowmass Chapel.

The vision of Camp Smashbox founder Adam Gilbert, the play area includes a three-story treehouse and scaled-down low ropes course on the chapel grounds. Funding for the project, which had its grand opening July 5, was provided anonymously by a member of the congregation.

“That was really, really beautiful,” said Charla Belinski, assistant pastor and director of children, youth and families.

The features were designed by architect Tim Owens, a member of the Snowmass Chapel. In addition to the treehouse and ropes features, there are swings, benches and a large wooden chair honoring the family of Rev. Robert de Wetter, who has been the chapel’s pastor for six years. In fact, the chair has a sign reading “Robert’s Roost.”

Paul Dimento led the construction of the play area, and Jeff Sivess of Snowmass Lawn and Plant went “above and beyond” to get the grounds ready for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Belinski said.

Attendees of Camp Smashbox, a secular kids day camp that has been offered at the chapel for several years now, have loved it, Belinski said. But the play area is open to the public as long as children are supervised. Kids are welcome to find a chapel staff member on site if they don’t have an adult to watch them, Belinski said.
