A passion for chili

Aspen Historical Society, Aspen Times Collection

“Tower sweeps chili contest with fourth straight victory,” recapped The Aspen Times on Aug. 14, 1986. “The Tower Restaurant swept the competition Sunday in the Snowmass Chili Shoot-out, winning the Chili Champ title for the fourth consecutive year and winning the first Fritos Brand Corn Chips Chili Pie Challenge.” With more than 1,000 people “judging” the 14 competitors, this competition was the only one in the country at the time where all the contestants were local restaurants and chefs and the public served as the judges. Other top finishers included the Brother’s Grille, Mountain Dragon and Snowmass Resort Association Guest Services. With the Snowmass Mammoth Festival on June 7 and 8, the chili-tasting tradition continues.

Editor’s note: This page is a partnership between the Snowmass Sun and the Aspen Historical Society with two primary goals in mind: to improve the knowledge of Snowmass history in the region and to collect historical photographs of the Snowmass region for the society. If you have pieces of history to donate, please send them to archives@aspenhistory.org or call 970-925-3721.
