Spencer: Opposing Aspen airport expansion
Tom Melberg (Jan. 12) says that a half-century of tenacious growth management has kept Aspen worth living in and visiting and remains our best hope for maintaining Aspen’s uniqueness.
Regarding the airport, growth (read: allowing larger private planes) will benefit few while endangering our community’s foundational values. Commercial airlines are not advocating for runway expansion! What I’ve heard around town is that flight prices will go down if we expand the airport — THIS IS FALSE. Big money is pushing this, and the county and FAA are the face of it.
At risk, seriously, is Aspen’s soul. Do you want Aspen to have more exclusive clubs that we have to pay to be a part of? That will be ASE.
I believe that any decision about a runway/taxiway widening should be voted on by all Pitkin County voters, not just our five commissioners.
