Sopris Sun Board: Independent journalism supported by Aspen Thrift Shop

These days, a trusted source of news is more important than ever. The Sopris Sun is the only nonprofit, independent newspaper in our valley, and we are grateful to the Aspen Thrift Shop for their generous support.
Did you know the Sopris Sun mentors young high school journalists with hand-on guidance from newspaper professionals? We are proud of our Youth News Bureau and the excellent work they produce every school year through our Youth Journalism Program.
Sol del Valle, our Spanish-language newspaper, is distributed Aspen to Rifle every week, creating an interactive dialogue with our Latino community. The Sun’s Editor Raleigh Burleigh started Sol del Valle four years ago, and it is beautifully produced by Sol’s talented Editor Bianca Godina.
With Todd Chamberlin as our executive director, we get by despite $12,000 per week in costs to create, print, and distribute both newspapers. It really does take a village to support our local nonprofit publications, and we offer heartfelt thanks to the Aspen Thrift Shop for doing their part.

Independence Pass might see earliest season opening on record
Historically, the high-mountain route between Aspen and Twin Lakes tends to open around Memorial Day, with the previous record for the earliest opening set on May 11.
