Rubey: Don’t get bullied on FBO lease
The negotiators of the fixed-base operator lease continue to demonstrate a complete lack of understanding regarding how badly they are screwing over local pilots. The county is granting a 30-year monopoly to a Dallas-based corporation to earn $5 per gallon (gross profit) on sales to locals when most FBOs nationwide make between 30 cents to $1 per gallon.
Our representatives brag about their billion-dollar deal failing to understand that this revenue is derived from a disproportionate tax on their own constituents. We are living with a terrible deal currently and it feels like we are going to sign another terrible deal (for locals) that we will have to live with for the next 30 years.
Why does the Pitkin County Commission love money and a Dallas-based corporation more than their own constituents? It is not too late to fix this. Cost plus $2 is the answer. It’s fair for everyone. They won’t walk the deal. I promise. And if they do, there are 10 other FBOs who will step into the lease.
Don’t get bullied. Atlantic is our guest.
