Mountain Mayhem: Cinco de Mayo

Beloved Aspen bar and restaurant, Mi Chola, invited the community to their Cinco de Mayo celebration last Monday, May 5.
Owner Darren Chapple and his team pulled out all the stops with festive decor, music from Mike Nakagawa (also known as DJ Naka G), Mexican food and drink specials, and a welcoming atmosphere.
As noted in a recent edition of The Aspen Times, Mi Chola will close in late September, a bittersweet ending after many years occupying the corner of Main and Mill Streets. Rather than focusing on the forthcoming closure this fall, staff and guests’ spirits seemed buoyed that day by the community support of Mi Chola on Cinco de Mayo. The kitchen turned out nachos, tacos, enchiladas, and salads throughout the afternoon and evening while the bartenders were busy making margaritas and serving cervezas, a celebration of Mexican-American culture and this Aspen establishment.
Chapple says there will be more occasions to celebrate over the next four months and to keep an eye out for updates on its social media.

High Points: Support public radio
You likely have heard that amongst the litany of tyrannical acts the Trump administration is attempting to implement, one is the defunding of public media, including National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). On May Day, in the dark of night, the White House issued an executive order titled “ENDING TAXPAYER SUBSIDIZATION OF BIASED MEDIA.” Never mind that the President does not possess the authority to unilaterally suspend funding for public media; that authority rests with Congress.
