Would I lie to you?

As an erstwhile proofreader at the Times, I was dismayed — no — shocked, shocked!, at the misuse of the verb “to lie” in a photo caption on the front page of Wednesday’s paper.

The beams do not lay across the railroad tracks. They lie across the tracks.

Now I need to go lie down.
