The voters have spoken on Pan and Fork

Dear Basalt Town Council,

My wife, Cara, and I are writing to express our concern regarding the Town Council’s discussion to buy the Pan and Fork property currently owned by the Roaring Fork Community Development Corp.

We were extremely surprised and dismayed to learn that some council members want to proceed with buying this property despite the town election in November. The town spent considerable time, energy and money to put this question to a vote in November, and it was defeated.

We have heard that some council members feel that the vote was “close enough” to support moving forward with the purchase. That is irrelevant; it was defeated. It was also proposed that property taxes did not need to be raised in order to pay for it, rather sales tax money earmarked for open space and trails could be used. Those are funds that voters have approved for open space and trails, not for this purchase. Regardless of where the money comes from, some other aspect of our town will suffer.

We believe that proceeding with this purchase is fiscally irresponsible. We feel strongly that the Basalt town core needs revitalization. We also feel, as do the majority of voters, that the development of this parcel should be overseen by the town through mechanisms that are already in place like the Planning and Zoning Commission, but that it should not be controlled directly by the town.

We urge you to respect the outcome of the November election.

David and Cara Borchers
