Thank you to Aspen from missing climber’s wife
Dear Aspen community,
My name is Maureen Cook, and my husband of 17 years and father to our three children is missing in the Maroon Bells/Pyramid Peak wilderness area. Dave went missing in September 2016, and the months since have been long with grief and shock. Communication has been difficult, as sadness depletes our energy and desire to reach out. We miss Dave so very much.
During these months, we have had tremendous support from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Mountain Rescue Aspen, and they will continue to search for Dave this July and August. They have put together a comprehensive plan that best utilizes their resources and focuses on key areas. The plan will include airborne, canine and ground searchers, and we are confident in their abilities to perform a safe and thorough search.
We cannot thank the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and Mountain Rescue Aspen enough, as their professionalism, kindness and commitment to continuing the search has made this process as smooth as it can be. Thanks also goes to all of those who have offered to help with the search, but we trust this team of experts. We know that their plan will yield the best possible result in this situation.
To say that we miss Dave is an understatement. There are no words that could adequately express our sadness. If I could part with any advice, it would be to please, please, please share your detailed plans with loved ones before you go on an adventure alone — and stick to that plan as best you can. It may not create a different outcome, but it could provide some peace in the minds of your family and friends.
We appreciate the gracious support, gentleness and hospitality that your community has provided us. You are admired, respected and cherished.
