Tax break info for seniors

This is in response to the letter by Jim Markalunas, "Give old-timers a tax break" (The Aspen Times, Commentary, Sept. 5). Property tax relief programs have been in place for low-income seniors in Pitkin County, the city of Aspen and the Aspen School District since the early 1990s. Information about these programs is published every year in the Pitkin County Senior Newsletter, "The Voice of Experience," from January through April. Interested low-income residents over age 60 can learn if they qualify by contacting Pitkin County Senior Services at 970-920-5432 or seniors@pitkincounty.com. Information also is available about the Colorado Senior Property Tax Exemption, Colorado Property Tax Deferral for Seniors and the Colorado Property Tax/Rent/Heat Rebate program. Current gross income restrictions are approximately $30,000 annually for a single person, $40,000 for a couple. We welcome all seniors in the community to familiarize themselves with the resources and services offered by Pitkin County Senior Services. Know us before you need us!
