Storage building proposal in Garfield County out of step with surroundings
Dear Garfield County commissioners:
Our family is writing to you to express our strong opposition to the mini-storage facility known as Blue Mountain Mini Storage proposed for the northwest corner of Highway 82 and Catherine Store Road (County Road 100).
As ours is a rural and residential community, the idea that such a facility would be located outside a commercial or industrial zoning district is unacceptable to us and counter to the county’s own guidelines.
As you are aware, this proposed industrial use does not conform to the county’s comp plan, which specifies medium density residential for that parcel, and industrial uses are not allowed in a residential subdivision. Further:
• The appearance is not consistent with our rural and pastoral community, consisting of homes, horse and hay fields, and a modest country store.
• The size and scope of the project is out of character and inconsistent with any other structures in the area. It also does no fulfill any community need.
• Increased truck and car traffic in an already challenging intersection is a concern as well as the safety of pedestrians who crossing from the bus stop to the park and ride.
Our unique community is simply not the place for a three-story commercial structure. And if allowed to proceed, what might be next? A fast-food drive through and/or a franchise convenience store?
You should also be aware, in addition to our position, HOA board members representing Blue Creek Ranch, Aspen Equestrian Estates, St. Finnbar, Ranch at Roaring Fork, Lyons Ridge Subdivision, as well as representatives of Aspen Polo Partners & Aspen Valley Polo Club, are also unanimously opposed. The majority of homeowners and business owners are, as well.
We ask each of you vote “no” on this application and proposal.
