Safety issues regarding 737s flying into Aspen

Over 25 years ago, Continental Airlines used to service Aspen. It is my understanding (from a Continental employee at the time) that in around 1991, Continental Airlines did a safety study concerning landing 737s in Aspen. Continental found it unsafe to fly 737s into Aspen due to the surrounding mountains. Continental Airlines decided to pull out of Aspen after the study. Have the authorities checked the safety concerns for flying 737s into Aspen? Does the runway need to be expanded for airplanes that may not be able to land?
