Letter: Welcome Sheik and Sater

It is with great pride that Theatre Aspen announces the arrival of Broadway’s Tony Award-winning creative team Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, who will be in residence at Theatre Aspen through May 31 developing their new musical, “Alice By Heart,” based on “The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland.” While developing new works for the American theater is not new to us, this project marks an important new strategic direction for our organization, one that seeks to establish Aspen as one of the most sought-after destinations for America’s top theater artists and one of the most sought-after destinations for America’s theatergoers.

Sheik and Sater will be joined by 10 of Broadway’s finest young performers and New York’s hottest new director, Lear deBessonet, who will work together to take this exciting new work to the next stage in its development. Their two-week residence will begin in the rehearsal room at the Red Brick Center for the Arts and culminate in an informal public presentation at the Wheeler Opera House on May 31 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a talk-back session, which will give those in attendance an opportunity to ask the team questions about what goes into creating a Broadway musical.

Our new work-development initiative already is receiving national recognition for Theatre Aspen and for Aspen, with articles appearing in Playbill.com and BroadwayWorld.com, two of the industry’s most respected news sources. We are thrilled to be providing Aspen locals and visitors a unique experience that simply cannot be found anywhere else in the country. We hope you’ll join us for the presentation on May 31 and that the “Aspen experience” we offer these artists resonates all over the country as we build this exciting program. Let us know if you want to be part of it!
