Letter: We did it
Our mission at English in Action is to provide one-on-one tutoring to adults who want to learn English and to “build community two people at a time,” but our latest fundraising challenge was a huge success as a result of the effort of nearly 130 people working together.
We set out to raise $20,000 in honor of our 20th anniversary. If successful, it would become $40,000 on account of a challenge grant from a local donor. The response has been overwhelming thanks to the amazing support and generosity of this community. Unexpectedly, we have surpassed our goal, and have now raised more than $50,000 with an additional $5,000 challenge gift that set the bar higher in our final push to the finish line.
Far more than “two people at a time” have rallied together to support our efforts. Gifts of all sizes helped us get there, and ranged from $13 (given by children younger than 10) to $5,000. No gift was too small or too big. Some individuals and businesses banded together to give as part of a group effort; others stepped up their giving from past years; and still others gave for the very first time to our organization.
We are grateful for this outpouring of support so that we can continue to teach English to our hardworking students, recruit the volunteer tutors who make it all happen and, in turn, build stronger bridges in our diverse community between people of different cultures. English In Action has a waiting list of more than 100 adults who would like a volunteer tutor. As we begin our next 20 years, we are launching an ambitious effort to serve many more of those students each year.
All of us at English in Action, including our amazing students and tutors, are touched by everyone who stepped up to help us meet this fundraising challenge and build a stronger comm-”unity” while doing so. This was a crucial first step in meeting our larger goals.
To keep the momentum going, we have a fun event coming up. Please join us to celebrate our work at our fundraiser, “Bites from Around the World,” from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Gray Lady Aspen, where English in Action board member and celebrity chef, Susie Jimenez, will be preparing the food. Visit http://www.englishinaction.org for more information. We hope to see you there!
With many thanks and much gratitude,
The board and staff of English In Action
