Letter: We can do better

We can do better

I just splurged on a 20-cent paper bag at the grocery store because once again I had forgotten my canvas bags. It’s great Aspen has eliminated plastic bags, making a conscious move to secure our beautiful surroundings. As I walked out of City Market thinking of ways I could reuse my new paper bag (send a package, ripen my organic avocados, buy more groceries), I couldn’t help notice the irony at the lineup of assorted “gas guzzlers” loitering in the parking lot. The town isn’t that big. Does everybody really need to drive to it? Or to the school in the morning? Are we getting that much closer to where we want to be or saving that much time by traveling via private vehicle? In a town of health fanatics, I’m surprised more people don’t run, walk or take the bus. For instance, if one were to run to the store, workout is complete and they can take the free bus home, eliminating congestion in town. We have it so good with the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority. I challenge you to get more creative when it comes to town travel. Think Aspen in the long term. If everyone keeps driving, we will be pressed to sacrifice our environment to accommodate people and their automobiles. One can see what becomes of places like Summit County, which tradse in natural beauty for conveniences. Applause to Aspen for all its environmental efforts thus far, though I think we can do even better! Just sayin’.
