Letter: Two great administrators for two more years
I am writing this letter in support of Diana Sirko, Rob Stein and the Roaring Fork School District Board of Education. I attended the Board of Education meeting in December and the Jan. 28 meeting. One topic of discussion was again the contract renewal for both Sirko and Stein.
Once again, the question was, “Why can’t Stein take over as superintendent now?” My question is, “Why can’t we have two very strong and knowledgeable leaders for two more years?” Each has their own unique talents and can improve and benefit our teachers and students.
Is it out of fear that we would be losing Stein if we don’t allow him to become the superintendent now? I have read several articles, one in 5280 (the Denver magazine) and one that was an interview with Stein in Chalkbeat Colorado. The articles left me with a sense of his being a person who stays around until the job is done. In his position with the Roaring Fork School District as the chief academic officer, his job is still a work in progress.
Sirko is our connection to the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Legislature and now as president of the Colorado Association of School Executives, our link to school districts across the state of Colorado. She works with the teachers and school board to make sure they are getting the support they need. Sirko also is our connection to the district, as she promptly responds to any questions or concerns.
Stein is our connection to student needs being met and supporting the principal’s school decisions. Stein is working on student and educational concerns as the chief academic officer. Let’s allow Stein to continue in his role, a role the school board got creative with when he had to resign his position in 2012. Let’s trust that he does want to make a difference in our schools.
I applaud the school board for taking its time to work out a contract that will benefit our school district. It works very hard for us and should be thanked for “hearing our voices” and responding. It is working very hard to do what is best for everybody.
Let’s allow both Stein and Sirko to continue and complete the work that they are in the process of performing. Then when Sirko has completed her work and Stein has completed his work, and is ready to fully take on the superintendent’s role, he does so with all of the teachers’, staff and parents’ support. Why can’t we have two leaders for two years? In the end it is the staff, the teachers and the students who benefit from having two strong leaders. If we make a decision because we “fear” losing Stein, then “fear” has made us lose the benefit of a terrific administrator for two more years.
