Letter: The cost of a drop in the bucket

Dear editor, hooray! President Obama and his Environmental Protection Agency just reordered nationwide electricity production by mandating a 30 percent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions (from 2005 levels) by 2030. The June 3 Investors Business Daily reported that the new measure will eliminate about 200,000 jobs each year and will lower gross domestic product by $50 billion per year through 2030.

Remember that a Democrat-controlled Congress debated and rejected this legislation in 2009. So what? Who needs checks and balances when we have the brightest man in history at the helm? Obama knows what is best for all of us.

The June 3 Wall Street Journal reported that “based on the EPA’s own carbon accounting, shutting down every coal-fired power plant tomorrow and replacing them with zero-carbon sources would reduce the Earth’s temperature by about one-twentieth of a degree Fahrenheit in a hundred years.”

I suppose the 3 million lost jobs and the $800 billion hit to our economy is worth 0.05 degrees Fahrenheit if you worship at the altar of “climate change.” But try turning your thermostat down from 65 degrees to 64.95 degrees tonight. Then pretend yours is one of the 3 million lost jobs and report back. Tell me if the “benefit” outweighed the cost.
