Letter: Tell BLM to ‘let the leases expire’

In the winter of 2013, we turned out in droves to protest drilling proposals in Thompson Divide. Not too long after, we learned that the leases had been “suspended.” I know a lot of us heaved a huge sigh of relief thinking that a very serious problem had gone away. It was all in the word “suspension.” Unfortunately, it really meant that the Bureau of Land Management had given the leaseholders more time to pursue drilling.

Last month the BLM finally initiated a process that can result in the cancellation of the leases in Thompson Divide. The BLM is asking for the community’s input, and we each need to send comments to speak out against drilling.

Please send a letter telling the BLM why it should protect Thompson Divide.

Your letter needs to be received by May 16 and may be emailed to wrnfleases@blm.gov or mailed to BLM’s Colorado River Valley Field Office at 2300 River Frontage Road, Silt, CO 81652.

The BLM is the agency that has the ability to void the leases and save Thompson Divide.

Please urge it to do so.
